Home Safety Equipment

Whether working on a high rise, in a machine shop, or doing projects around the house, using the right tools in the right way for a job is of paramount importance. Equally important is using the appropriate safety equipment. Even the simplest of repair jobs can result in injury if proper precautions are not taken. Here are some tips on how to stay safe while completing DIY projects around your home.

Home Safety: Tips for Using Equipment when doing DIY Improvement

Be sure to know and understand how to use your equipment when conducting DIY improvements aroung the home.

First, use the right tools. If you need to cut a piece of wood, don’t grab a serrated knife out of the drawer. A good jigsaw can be purchased for as little as $50, and provides better control and enhanced safety, making it less likely that you’ll cut yourself accidentally.

Whenever cutting any material, it is imperative to wear safety goggles. The smallest sliver of wood or metal can cause grave eye injuries. And no, wearing sunglasses isn’t an option, because they don’t sit flush against your face, and leave your eyes vulnerable from all sides.

When putting down flooring, or painting baseboards, (or any project that requires a lot of kneeling), knee pads can mean the difference between painful joints and pain-free movement. They also protect your knees from sharp debris that can cause cuts and bruising.

Gloves are a must for many jobs around the house, but not all safety gloves are created equal, so it’s important to select the correct safety glove for the task you are carrying out.

Disposable gloves are generally made from Latex or vinyl and are designed to protect the hands from a variety of substances such as dirt and grime when cleaning around the house. Gardening safety gloves, on the other hand, are more heavy duty, and are meant to protect the hands from damage incurred by weeding and digging. Garden safety gloves can also protect the hands from wear and tear when using spades, forks and gardening equipment.

Whatever the project, taking the time to use the right tools and protective gear can prevent unnecessary, and costly, injuries.
