The Lone Star state’s renowned hill country is nature at its best. A vista filled with wooded canyons, spring-fed rivers, graceful forests, dry lands and wetlands. The Hill Country starts just north of Austin and continues through to San Antonio, covering approximately 200 miles. The area has many attractions and activities that make living in the area a singular experience.

If planning a trip to Texas, be sure to check out the Hill Country.

A trip from San Antonio down Highway 16 takes you to Bandera, the self-proclaimed Cowboy Capital of the World. Visitors are encouraged to indulge in chicken-fried steak at the Old Spanish Trail Restaurant then to work it off dancing to live country music at Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar saloon. The Frontier Times Museum offers an eclectic collection that includes prehistoric arrowheads, stuffed animals, and a shrunken human head.

The Fredericksburg area is sometimes referred to as German Hill Country because the first European settlers were German immigrants who had bought millions of acres prior to emigrating. Up until the 1970s many locals still predominantly spoke German. Today, Fredericksburg boasts more than 300 bed and breakfasts as well as art galleries, boutiques, and specialty shops. The town retains close ties to its roots in places such as the Ausländer Biergarten, which features German cuisine and an impressive beer selection.

Fredericksburg was the home town of Admiral Chester Nimitz, who served as commander in chief of the Pacific Fleet during World War II. The area’s native son is honored by the Admiral Nimitz Museum and the National Museum of the Pacific War, with over one thousand artifacts on display, including a Japanese midget submarine captured during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Get close to nature at the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, home to a 425-foot pink granite boulder known as The Rock that is estimated to be about a billion years old. There are hiking trails to the top and a fine campground at the base of The Rock.

The Texas Hill Country is San Antonio’s backyard, the place where residents go to hike, fish, swim, camp, or just relax, making this city just that much more appealing as a place to set down roots.

If you plan on buying a home in the Texas Hill Country area, be sure to consult with either a real estate professional, such as a real estate agent or Realtor, or a financial advisor. After all, this is one of, if not thee, biggest purchases you’ll ever make.
